22404 - Diesel locomotive V 140 001 At the beginning of the 1930s, hydraulic power transmission had successfully proven itself in small locomotives and railcars. The Voith-Föttinger fluid transmission, which has now largely been perfected, offered several advantages and large diesel engines had achieved a satisfactory level of development. At the end of 1934, the Deutsche Reichsbahn therefore decided to build the world's first hydraulically driven large diesel locomotive under the leadership of Krauss-Maffei. The whole thing had a little catch, however, because the locomotive was to be completed by the beginning of the "100 Years of German Railways" exhibition in mid-July 1935. Therefore, the construction period was only eight months. In spite of many problems, an exemplary commitment by all parties involved, to get the diesel locomotive, initially known as V 16 101, up and running just in time and even to bring it to the Nuremberg exhibition under its own steam. After that, various test series were on the program and she sometimes even overshadowed the performance of steam locomotives such as the Prussian P 8 during test drives. The final acceptance by the DRG did not take place until 1936. The machine then ran in the Munich area and was soon redrawn according to its design in V 140 001. After successful probation, she proudly presented the Deutsche Reichsbahn in 1937 at the Paris World's Fair. As an outstanding engineering certificate of her time, she was even allowed to decorate herself with a “Grand Prix”. The Second World War interrupted the further development of powerful diesel locomotives and also sent the V 140 001 to the siding. But after the end of the war, the great interest of the occupying powers in technical innovations in Germany brought about a resurrection of the locomotive, which had been damaged in the war. Krauss-Maffei took over the reprocessing with small improvements and as early as late 1947 / early 1948, measurement and test drives took place again. Afterwards, the V 140 001 was now available in a burgundy coat of paint for the Frankfurt-Griesheim depot for a scheduled use. Until her final stop in December 1952, she traveled around 130,000 km on express, express and passenger trains to Nuremberg, Heidelberg and Fulda. A due main inspection, her loner status, The increasingly difficult procurement of spare parts and the delivery of new diesel locomotives led to the decommissioning of the progenitor of all hydraulic diesel locomotives on October 13, 1953. As a groundbreaking construction and trend-setting for the construction of large diesel locomotives, it did not go to the scrap, but was preserved and can be admired since 2006 in the branch of the German Museum in Munich, the round locomotive shed of the "Lokwelt Freilassing".
