Trix 22973 Tower Railcar Series 701
Model: With digital decoder and extensive operating and sound functions. Regulated high-performance propulsion. Maintenance-free motor in a compact design. 2 axles powered. Traction tires. Series 701 tower railcars As electrification progressed, the tower railcars became increasingly important for maintenance work in the electrified rail network of the young German Federal Railways. From 1954 onwards, Waggon- und Maschinenbau GmbH in Donauwörth (WMD) developed the so-called control tower railcars (TVT, also VT 55 or VT 93, from 1968: 701). Since an electric drive was out of the question, internal combustion engines were chosen as the drive source. Two Büssing motors (type U9A) with an output of 95.5 kW each were sufficient for the machine system of the first series (701 001-010 and 024). In all subsequent series, the two water-cooled underfloor motors (Büssing type U10) with a total output of 300 hp (221 kW) corresponded to the motors of the VT 98 (798) rail bus. Thanks to a special speed filling controller, a constant "creep speed" of 5 km / h could be achieved. The drive systems housed in a chassis similar to the VT 98 were designed for a trailer load of 40 t. Furthermore, shunting movements with a maximum trailer load of 200 t could be carried out with the railcar. For this purpose, the vehicle had received normal pulling and pushing devices in a generally lightweight design. Between the two cabs was a workshop room of about 26 m², where you could climb the observation pulpit to observe the overhead line. There was also a specially secured roof hatch and a pantograph for earthing and control on the roof. In the middle of the roof was the height and side adjustable lifting and swiveling platform with an area of ​​almost 6 m², which could be raised up to one meter. There was also an extendable ladder with which work at heights of up to 15 m was possible. A loudspeaker system was installed for communication between the driver's cab, the lookout and the lifting platform. The vehicles also had air disc brakes, cooling water heating and two separate 12 V power supply systems. By 1974, the DB had purchased a total of 162 twin-engine tower railcars, which had been designated the 701 series since 1968. Originally, all TVTs had a purple coating (RAL 3004). From 1975, the paintwork was gradually repainted to the usual golden yellow (RAL 1004) for DB company vehicles. From 2002, the lack of spare parts and the high age of the vehicles led to increased retirement, which was completed when the last TVT was switched off in 2013. However, numerous 701 could be sold to private utility companies and museum railways and can still be admired from time to time.
